Hide and seek is taken to a new level with the prevalence of low-cost consumer GPS devices. Geocaching is the name given to the art of hiding an object somewhere on the planet and providing only it’s GPS co-ordinates to locate it. Sound easy? Think again. Although accurate to within a 3m radius, finding your “treasure” within that radius is a whole new ball game. Only the most dedicated and vigilent will succeed, usually writing their name in the cache’s logbook and placing it back where they found it. The proverbial thrill is in the hunt I guess. Geocaching is catching on quickly and there are over ten thousand caches world wide. Happy caching!

Drawing on water

February 25, 2008

Researches at Akishima Laboratories in Japan have devised a way to ‘draw’ letters, words and simple pictures on the surface of water. The effect is created using an enclosure of 50 wave generator. The device requires sophisticated software that enables the generator to create little pixels. The effect is pretty cool. Where will we see it next?

Magic Glass

February 25, 2008

I instantly fell in love with this concept. Imagine having a magical glass with you that you can use to obtain information about anything you see.

The thin ultra-connected tablet device by Japanese Mac Funamizu doesn’t have a name yet, but it really is like a magical glass, a window to the world. You look through the glass, choose any object you want, and you can instantly access a multitude of information about it.

You can use it when you want to know a car model, an insect name, what kind of food is served at a restaurant and how much it costs, who built a bridge, etc. etc. Choose a building or a monument and it brings you details of the location and features of the area. You can use it to check the meaning of a word in the newspaper, book, magazine, etc. You can opt for a dictionary, wikipedia, thesaurus and anything else available on the web.

Imagine having this device when you are on vacation or a trip. Such an exciting way to explore new places.
